Tek.Lun - The Crusade [EP Review]

What's up, fam? It's ya boy: the muzical Don Jon Escobar aka the real Carlton Banks aka Bill Nye's 2nd cousin and ya boy is BACK for the long haul this time around. If you don't know me, my real fake name is Waverly Spades.
Today, we have this project from Baltimore producer/DJ, Tek.Lun. I first heard of Tek.Lun's production on GoldLink's Hip Hop Interlude. Very short song, but I loved that beat (one of my faves on the tape) and I really wanted to listen more into the dude. I also just wish that beat was longer.
This past week, Tek.Lun dropped The Crusade EP, which is 30 minutes of a very House/trap sound with some Bmore Club influence. It sounds very different from a lot of things coming from this scene. Every pad is so lush, but every distorted 808 kick is so clean, fat, and thick. It's very together, and diverse in the way that the album goes from Chicago House (Consequences) to a chill, trap feel (Broken 2), from some alien Dilla + Outkast shit (Plum w. Drew) to some funky, upbeat shit (PRAISE DE GANJA!). It's a great summer release because I can feel like I can take this shit and ride through the hood (in like spring or fall) and still feel like it's 82 degrees Fahrenheit outside. The title track (The Crusade) literally feels like a Crusade through the hood. Return of the Mack shit. amirite? So much of this is sample heavy and late 80's/90's reminiscent. Overall, I fucks with this EP heavily. There may be an LP version of this later on, so I'm kinda hype for that too.

Bobby Woody - Roland (Telegraph Ave Remix)

Hey Trekkies, and Nerds! I'm feeling bad because I realized that I didn't put on my signature introduction. I've really been out of it, so I'm going to revamp it for this one. Ayo, it's me: Bill Nye's 2nd cousin aka the ORIGINAL black nerd aka the REAL Carlton Banks aka the Blacker Hacker aka Big Ghost's Prodigy aka the 3rd realest nigga in the game aka Game of Spades, but you may just know me by fake name on the streets: Waverly Spades. Today I have with me, a friend of mine, Bobby Woody's latest track. I haven't put him on here since his "Rollin In Da Deep." (hahah been a while, dude.) While Bobby is a great rapper, I've always felt that he was producer first, and this one is his latest beat. (This is an instrumental remix of Telegraph Ave from Childish Gambino's new album "Because The Internet.") His rapping is fast paced, all over the place, and confident in his insecurities and his beats are a reflection of that. When it starts, you have no idea where it's going to go, but then, you hear that "Chicks Love Bobby Woody." It's a lot of the little things that make this track. The piano lines are easily a standout. That weird percussive synth thing that plays around with the hats. This dude even sings for a bit (or at least I think that's him. I didn't hear that part in the orignal. lol.) Overall, this is a great track. I was listening to the original nonstop before I heard this. Good ass job.

Chrissy Vasquez - Nightmares [VIDEO]

What's up nerds and trekkies? It's Bill Nye's 2nd cousin, but you may know me as Waverly Spades. Today, I have Chrissy Vasquez' new video for her new song "Nightmares." Last week, I posted her mixtape because I loved it. I posted this because idk why. I like the song a lot, but this video is.... I don't know how to express my feelings here. I love to see Chrissy in a bathtub and being artsy and shit, it's just... Idk. The video has so much potential. I love the scenes and everything. It seems like a dark Lana Del Rey video, but what irks me soooooooo fucking much is the quality. It seems like the video was shot with a potato and edited in Windows Movie Maker (which can be pulled off SOMETIMES). I'm not knocking it at all, I just reccomend some higher quality for the next video. Props to her for directing her own video.

Same Old Story - Nicholas Miles

Hey nerds and geologists. It's me the real Carlton Banks, but you probably know me as Waverly Spades. Today, I got this joint sent in by Nicholas Miles. He's another artist from Baltimore. It's called Same Old Story. It opens up with some soulful, sampled, dope shit. It's a nice little story about some burgular, I think. Next, it transitions into this weird, Neo-Dilla type beat and I just love it. Who produced that? It's like a part 2 to the first section. At one point he says "put you in a box, got you locked, duct tape in a basement." This sounds like the murder at Da Vinci's down in Mt. Vernon where two employess were robbed, locked in the basement, and burned to death in a fire started by a robber. Baltimore's crazy. Both of these parts feel like short snippets and it really makes you want a full song, especially for the 2nd part. Overall, this song is dope. Check it out.

Chrissy Vasquez - Pro$per Proficient [Mixtape Review]

Oh hi there, nerds and freaks and geeks. You probably know me as Bill Nye's 2nd cousin or the real Carlton Banks, but for those of you who don't know me at all, my pseudonym is Waverly Spades. Lately, I've been on summer break because nerds need breaks too. I got a job, went to camp, watched a lot of cartoons and catfish. It's been real. Free my nigga, summer. Now, back to the review. Over this summer, I've been hearing about this girl who goes by "Chrissy Vasquez." She's been randomly showing up on my timeline through retweets and people posting her stuff. I click on her profile and there's this little cartoon twiticon and link to her mixtape. I'm strangely attracted because like, lightskin bitches and pokeballs... it doesn't get better than that! But seriously, there aren't many female singers/artists in Baltimore who take their craft seriously, so the album artwork alone sparked my curiosity. Let's see  how this sounds.

(Interlude) For The Boys - Ever since Drake did Bria's Interlude and Ronny did Liya's Interlude, everyone thinks that an interlude is just a track you do to commemorate to someone else, but that's not really the case! It's the track usually done between tracks. I'm not going to be too much of a stickler on this stuff though. Musically, this introlude throws you off because unlike most modern pieces of music, there's background music. This is purely instrumental. That is so foreign and interesting to me. Chrissy has an amazingly warm, alto voice. The title of the track is "For The Boys," but it sounds like it's for someone specific. She seems very sex-craving, but intimate in a way that's just cute. I'm impressed.
4.7/5

Senseless - Everything about this song is so jazzy. I really feel like this is a young Billie Holiday. drug addiction and all. lol. Much like the last song, this sounds like a little letter. It's again, cute.
3.9

Sensual Money - This is a very abrupt change in pace. This short and sweet track is about a girl named Molly (an ironic reference to the drug that Trinidad Jame$ made famous, I'm presuming). "They don't call her Molly for nothing. You'll see if you just slip her something." She's the stereotypical "party girl." She's got a drug addiction to cocaine, heroine, and mollies I presume. Like most good girls gone bad, she didn't want it to happen. There are some great double entendres like "Molly shot herself down." This happens to be the most hard hitting song on the tape for me. I really like it
4.9/5

Smeared Lipstick (Prod. by Ricky Broadway) - Engineering-wise, it immediately annoys me how loud the vocals are compared to the beat at times, but at other times, it feels like a nice artistic touch. Ricky Broadway made the perfectly, eerie beat for this girl. This song is back and directed to two boys. It's an interesting ending to an EP that seems almost too short.
"He made me numb. He made me cum."
3/5

Well, for the first time in Nerd History, I'm almost at a lost of words for this body of work I just listened. to. -almost.- Where do I start? Due to the intimate nature of these songs, I can't tell if she's making herself a sex object or everything is truly personal. The first song is called "For The BOYS," but she definitely seems to be only talking to one person. Even if it is a bit seemingly out there, everything still seems classy. She almost reminds me of the Weeknd, in a sense, she can say whatever the fuck she wants, and people won't hate it. They'll always love it because of the voice and vibe of the song, but don't think I'm knocking the authenticity of this girl. I sorta want to compare her to Billie Holiday, but I feel her voice isn't grown enough for this. I could immediately hear this girl doing a song with Lorine Chia or Kilo Kish.  This is a really ill, little EP. It's not too short, but it leaves you wanting more. Chrissy did this one right. I'm rooting for her.

EndOfTime (Feat. Marlo D.) [Prod. by Richard Desire]

It's been a minute since I've gotten to check my inbox and an hour since I've found something in there that I absolutely like. Aus Taylor sent me one of his joints, "EndOfTime" back in April, but I'm bumping my head to it like it just came with Yeezus. I don't know the sample, but that beat is so triumphant. Richard Desire did his thing! This was Aus' first original track, and for a first, it's great. Marlo D on that last verse kills. They rap about the somewhat cryptic society we live in. Aus, Marlo, and Richard are all parts of a Baltimore creative collective called "The Creators." After this track, Aus already seems like such an established artist. I'm definitely looking forward to see more.

Nova Starz - Dark, Lovely Places... for the #RAGERS [Mixtape Review]

What's up, trekkies and nerds everywhere? It's me, Bill Nye's 2nd cousin, the real black nerd, the hip hop connoisseur, if you will, but you may really know me as Waverly Spades. Today, I have Nova Starz debute mixtape/album, Dark, Lovely Places... for the #Ragers. If you don't know who Nova Starz is, she's an R&B singer out of Baltimore. She's only released like 2 songs so far, but they're both so amazing. She's done many a features for Baltimore artists in the past two years. I have been waiting for this mixtape since I first heard the first single for the album, Not Surprised. I saw so much in her when I heard that first single (and watched her video for "Time Machine"), and I already know that I won't be disappointed with this project. The mixtape is entirely produced by her husband, Street Scott, which means the production on this is most likely going to be ridiculouslyfuckinginnovativeandperfectallthewaythrough mindblowing. Well now I can't wait to listen to these tracks because I'm really excited to hear Nova's debut project and the direction it took, especially since she's an R&B artist. There seems to be no set standard for R&B/Alt R&B, and I just love the creativity in it. The thought of this has me actually jumping around in my computer chair.

Insane About You - The mixtape opens with some chilling, very ethereal pads, very reminiscent of a Drake songs. Nova starts singing with her scintillant voice. Hardly a minute in I'm just in love with album already. I want to give it a 600% already. DAWG. THE DRUMS AND SYNTHS CAME IN. This right here, son... I'm ready to shed a tear just because this track is so beautiful. Her style so far is reminding me a little bit of Imogen Heap. To say that Scott's production on this track is flawless is an understatement. A beautiful start the tape.
5/5

Not Surprised - Weird little transition, but it's okay. I'm already grooving to the beat. I could go on about how much I love this track, but I did a full review on it, sooo yeah. Just go read that.
5/5

Cops Pulling Me Over - After that little intro. I immediately started jumping around. Here's a nice little song about Nova being high as fuck and driving. Unfortunately, it's not like Kid Cudi in Pursuit of Happiness. She's getting pulled over and her vibe being killed. Well if I got pulled over, I'd definitely play this. My high would come back. The hook is soooooo catchy. Don't be surprised if you hear me singing that around.
4.8/5

White Lines - This was one of the singles that was released waaaaaaayy before the album was even announced. I love the production hear. That drum break with an 808 and pads over it. It's so simple and beautiful. I mean, I know it's bad that Nova Starz is talking about cocaine because cocaine is definitely bad, but seriously, this is just beautiful. Actually, maybe it's a metaphor for something I'm not getting.. (RapGenius pleeez!) Was that a little bit of Rickie Jacobs I heard in there? This is such a chill song.
4.6/5

The Heart's Of Rockets - Out of this completely futuristic album, this track is probably the most futuristic of them all. The syncopation, simple harmonization, autotune USED CORRECTLY (VERY FUCKING RARE), and content overal.... This so far is my favorite track off of the album. At this points, I'm noticing some of Street Scott's use of the same formula to make these beats, but each one still sounds so original and it's own! It's a matter of pads, synths, and heavy kicks basically, but then, there's so much more into it. Ahhhh. Why is that nigga such a beast?
5.6/5

One Last Try (Genius Kid ft. Queen Sunshine) [Prod. by Genius Kid] - First of all, I'll say that Genius Kid's production is somewhat fucking with Scott's. He's got the synth and heavy kick thing going on with some melody, but there's not all of the intricate little things and variations that Scott puts in his beats. After some analysis, it's actually a very welcome and nice change. This track is much more modern pop/trance than the previous ones, but I mean that in the best way possible. Starz goes above and beyond on those vocals
4/5

Smoke With You - This song is so contrasting for me. I like all of the sounds EXCEPT that one weird synth thing it starts out with, but this song still gets love. Usually girls who #RAGE aren't that attractive to me, but Nova completely changes this. She makes it sound so classy and somewhat healthy and it's not because she's just singing about smoking. This isn't any Wiz Khalifa track. This is a love song. A party and weed brought to people together. It's a cute love story. and by the end of that song, that synth thing that I hated actually sounds nice. It speaks.. Street Scott has a gift.
4.7/5

Kings and Queens (ft. Matt Wuest on Guitar) - This is just a great song. Matt Wuest on that guitar... Probably nothing better than live instruments in modern music. This makes me think of something a little bit Frank Ocean. Starz' higher range is so amazing. This track was a perfect collaboration between Matt Wuest, Scott, and Nova's vision. My words can't even really explain how much I love this song.
5.2/5

These Dreams (ft. Street Scott) - That synth bass thing in the beginning is so alien and futuristic. It was such a sudden change that my heart is beating a bit faster. The kick feels like a heartbeat. Who was that singing almost like Kanye West in the beginning? Was that Street Scott? Oh my gosh. I actually had to replay this track one more time to understand how amazing it was. This song is actually my favorite track on the album. Unanimous decision without a doubt. It sounds so simple, but it's so complex. It felt like the song was going to be longer, but it's over before you even knew it. I didn't even know Street Scott could sing! I thought he was going to rap. This is a great duet between the young, soon-to-be power couple. That whistling is even on point. lol.
7/5

I had VERY high expectations for this tape (like Empire State building) and Nova went wayyyy above and beyond those expectations (like she was on the Burj Khalifa or space elavator or some shit). The ethereal production would sometimes remind me of Nosaj Thing or Flying Lotus, but at the same time, it always had a genuine Street Scott feel. Each production was beyond major and game changing and I feel that's almost essential to Nova Starz' sound. Because of that, you might notice me judging this whole project a smore of a collaborative effort, rather than just Nova's debut. I couldn't tell if I'd pin her closer to Imogen Heap, Jhene Aiko, or just a mix of the two with some Frank Ocean. She's got her own sound with a nice soprano voice. At times, it almost sounds like she's British. That diction makes the harsh messages, sometimes a bit cuter and easygoing. I like the large instrumental pauses in some of the songs, it lets it all just speak for itself. At times, I couldn't fully understand what Nova was saying, so the melody was really speaking for itself and all of the messages and musical ideas were conveyed PERFECTLY. I don't think I've ever heard a project quite this solid. All I have for it is praise. Nova Starz and Street Scott are without a doubt two of the most talented people in Baltimore. This tape should be doing the numbers of Frank Ocean's first tape, if not more. I honestly encourage you to listen to the project and seriously share this with a friend. It's worth it! This shit is QUINTUPLE NERD APPROVED, my nigga.

Nellz GC - Cornell University [Mixtape Review]

Aye mane, It's Bill Nye's 2nd Cousin, aka Big Ghost's prodigy, aka the real Carlton Banks. A while ago (and I mean a WHILE ago), Baltimore rapper, Nellz GC sent me in his later mixtape, "Cornell University." I slept on this for about a month, then listened, and got to writing this up about a month later. Well lets see what I think about this guy..

Intro [Prod. by LA Beatz] - This track is all around beautiful. Already, I'm mad at myself for sleeping on this dude for so long. Nellz really introduces himself to us here with this track. He tells us that his father got 15 years, his older brother in jail, and his oldest died.
4.7/5

7PM in Baltimore - This song continues a very hardworking vibe. "I figure they want features from a nigga since they seen that Bossman was in my pictures" How'd you get a pic with Travon Davis though? I want to see that!
"I hope I make Biggie proud."
4/5

You A Lie (ft. Rockie Fresh) - Here's a remix of Rockie Fresh's new hit. This joint actually sounds like something a Baltimore artist would do. lol nawm saying? It's just that beat. Nellz did his thing. Only line that really stood out to me was "Live by my rep, you got twitter clout." That line alone describes a good portion of the "popular" people in Baltimore. It's funny actually. I skipped the track after a while because it got boring.
3/5

Cloud 9 (Ride To It) [Prod. by Soul] - I like this chill track. Of course the main idea of the song is about getting high, but he talks about a lot of Baltimore stuff that I'm familiar with myself. This may sound like lunacy, but this track got me a bit nostalgiac. I fucks with it.
"I'm from Baltimore. Keeping the dream alive. Home of the 4 pc. chicken and fries."
4.3/5

N-Credible (ft. BlitzTheTundra) [Prod. by BlitzTheTundra] - This whole track is just.. all over the place. I don't mean that in a bad way or a good way. I honestly don't know what to say about it. I mean, production is ill, but it's just everywhere.
3.4/5

Room 323 (BYOB) [Prod. by Soul] - This song aiiiiight. The beat is on some trill, Kendrick Lamar shit. At times, I hear his flow got a little Kendrickish too. The sample at the end is ill.
2.5/5

The Vent - A remix of "The Calm" by Drake. It goes hard. Again, not much to say. Nellz is just venting. It's all proof of how stress relieving writing really can be (stay in english class, kids!)
3.9/5

The Ride - Another Drake remix, but except this time, for Drake and The Weeknd's popular track "The Ride." It sounds like another venting track. I like this one. I actually start to feel like I can relate to Nellz. He raps about his identity problems, bitter troubles with women, and the typical comeup. He got that Black American Teen Dream.
4.7/5

Golden Child (ft. Cash Haz) - This is a hard track. The mixing annoys me. There goes that Baltimore nigga acapella part lol.
2/5

Soul Searcher [Prod. by All Star] - At this point of the mixtape, I'm finding myself bored of the same flow and lyric topics, but the track is still okay. The beat is hot. At the end, it's a great way to end the track.

Most of this mixtape sounds like it's written by a Baltimore nigga. Like this is a Baltimore rapper mixtape, if you nawm saying? A lot of typical shit is said, and the wordplay definitely needs to be worked on, but besides all of that it's a really good tape. Unlike many Baltimore rappers, Nellz realizes what it means to be introspective. It's somewhat beautiful, but can grow boring. He's one of the rappers where beat choice means a lot. Nellz claims himself as the "Golden Child" in the family. I'm rooting for him after this mixtape. Overall it's okay. Well not okay, above okay. I fucks with it.

Bink - Invitation [VIDEO]

Hey there everybody! It's me, the real Carlton Banks, Bill Nye's 2nd cousin, and Paul Hewitt's homeboy. Here today, I am showing you Bink's latest video to the intro from his mixtape 3.5, "Invitation." It's short and to the point. The mix sounds waaay better than the CDQ somehow haha. The video was done by DiamondfFireFilms. It looks like the video to that song that Joey Bada$$, Casey Veggies, and Mac Miller did last 4th of July. It's a bit typical, but I'm not complaining or anything. If you want my review of the song, check my review of Bink's 3.5 EP. I do wonder how the video got over 50k views though. With only 184 likes and 78 comments, I'll assume that he paid for some, or DMVJams is a much more popular site than I thought it was. I believe they posted this to their site when the video first dropped. Check it out and tell me what you think about it.

Jase - Waiting...[New Mixtape]

Download Mixtape | Free Mixtapes Powered by DatPiff.com

What's up everybody? It's the real black nerd here, and I would like to say, "What am I doing?" I've been bumping this joint for like a month or so and still haven't posted it to the blog. I honestly didn't know much about Jase before I checked  out his free album, but I'm glad I checked it out. If you happen to be ignorant of Jase's identity, he's a rapper from Baltimore. He's associated with TrapRockRadio and he's part of TAGMG.
This album here.. This thing is amazing. It's late and honestly, I'm too lazy to write much, but I'd like to say that an album like this is something not so new, but almost forgotten in rap music. It's a versatile album. You've got songs of all variety. There's the random ones, hard ones, smooth ones, etc. There's literally a little bit of everything on here. With production from Street Scott, Dre Stolah, and more, the beat selection on here is obviously ridiculous. The features are simply shattering. Jase's flows makes up for his lack of topics. Jay Verze - David Ruffin [New Song]

What's up? It's me, the real Carlton Banks aka the Based Trap God aka the Original black Nerd aka Bill Nye's 2nd Cousin. Today, I'm here with Jay Verze's latest single David Ruffin. I know, I know. I'm late. This single dropped on like the first day of the year and it's the 28th. I got school. Petition me. Well let's get to the song now.
Produced by Scrilla (who seems to be one of Verze's favorite Soundclick producers), this beat is just too smooth. Througout the track, Verze raps about how much life has changed for him in the past year as he's been getting popular making music. We all know that story. When people start to see another person on the comeup, they try to hop on the bandwagon. In the chorus, Mr. 21117 spits "They all tryna see it now. Got 'em thinking wow. They saying 'Oh you made it now? C'mon, let's get down. I'm so proud. You my brother now. We gon' make it out.'" While Verze complains of some people calling him on his high horse, his feelings are completely understandable. I've known of Verze since I heard his feature on Baltimore. Along with a lot of Baltimore talent, Verze has really been coming up. He's in the newspaper, doing these interviews, and opening up for Cam'ron. It's only natural that people would hop on the bandwagon. The song is a little motivation to keep going. I like the title reference to the late Temptation, David Ruffin. He started in the Temptations as a backup, but later became the frontman. The difference between him and Verze though is that ego problems (and a slight cocaine addiction) eventually killed one of them. JayIsonCocainelol
My advice to Verze: Stay humble until you really make it. Then rerelease this song. haha. When old niggas come up like "C'mon let's get down," just give them the number to the rejection hotline and get so much satisfaction when you give them that face like ----->

Bilal Muhammad (ft. Merciless Rod) - Birth Of Rap [Audio]

Today, I have this track I stumbled upon from up and coming, Baltimore rapper Bilal Muhammad. He brings in Merciless Rod (of Fatle Gang) for a nice feature in the beginning. I like this track. Both go to Poly, so I don't know if it's produced by fellow classmate Layno F. or someone else, but it sounds like someone played with the same sample as Clams Casino's "Gods" beat. This track is pretty ill.

Twoiney Lo - I Have A Dream

What's up, my precious, little children of the corn. It's me: The real Carlton Banks, Bill Nye's 2nd Cousin, the original Black Nerd and I want to introduce you to the New Year! Happy New Year from all of us (just me) here at NLR2.
On this fine New Year, I bring you some TwoineyLo. I know you're thinking "Wave, I thought you hated that nigga. That last post was brutal!" That's not true. I don't hate people! ...I just hated that song. Twoiney Lo sent me this a few days ago and I slept ago, but I decided to turn over a new leaf and look at everything in my inbox. I took a listen and I somewhat like this. Twoiney starts off with his own speech about his dream and life. Then, the beat fades in. The beat is nice. Ufmo made some old East Coast type shit. I like it. Sounds like a Joey BadA$$ beat. The lyrics didn't appeal to me at first, but at least they were on beat. Twoiney is clearly important. He spit a few good lines like "How you living holy if all you do is sin?" (possible Holy Life diss) "I find it crazy how people think they are the shit.. cuz the own a lot of material things." I like that Lil Wayne reference he stuck in there. The song ends with an MLK speech which reminds me of the end of Bobby Woody's "I Hate The Word," except it's actually Martin Luther King. lol. The song is nice and Twoiney Lo is showing improvement.

Nova Starz - Not Surprised (Prod. by Street Scott) [NEW SONG]

What's up? It's the real Carlton Banks over here and I'm just hoping y'all had an awesome Christmas (or whatever holiday you celebrate (or if you don't celebrate a holiday at all, I just hope you had a nice day)). My laptop's up and running again, so I'm back to this blog thing I do in my spare time. I'm on break until Wednsday, so I'll have a lot of that hehe.
This track right here, I heard a few days ago on BmoresVeryOwn and Street Scott sent it into me. Before I go in about how amazingly futuristic this is, let me introduce everyone here to Nova Starz and Street Scott. Both are artists from Baltimore. Nova Starz is a singer. I first heard of her earlier this year when I saw her video for Time Machine. That video in itself is crazy; the way it's put together, amazing vocals, and ridiculous production (also done by Scott). This woman is bringing originality and a new sound to RnB. She reminds me of Jai Paul in the exemperintality, but still having sort of an RnB/pop feel in her songs. Around then is also the time I first got into Street Scott. One of my friends who is also into the Baltimore Hip Hop Scene told me about him and this dude is ridiculous. While he's produced for major label artists such as Jim Jones, Max B, and Jadakiss, Street's production is going to be a major foundation in that Baltimore sound. He's produced a lot of Rickie Jacob's dopest shit and made heaven in a FreEP for Rome Duran. On top of his amazing production skills, Scott is an amazing rapper, doing features for artists such as Big Dro and having a single like Rocket Man. These two people are, in my opinion, two of the most creative and original artists we have in Baltimore. They're both on my list of people to make it out of here. You know what's even better?
They're engaged. WHAT? PEOPLE THIS AMAZING ACTUALLY FIND OTHER PEOPLE THAT ARE THAT AMAZING AND GET MARRIED. THAT'S RARE. it's happening, bro. You saw the end of that Time Machine video. lol. They're like a younger version of Winslow Dynasty lol.
AND NOWWWWWWW the song.
The song starts off with a little vocal bit that I know is from something else! Ahhh it's killing me that I can't remember what it is. Nova's voice throughout this whole track is just beautiful-- no. It's better than that. It's sumptuous. All vocal delivery is flawless. I wouldn't be surprised if she recorded it all in one take. Nova Starz makes singing sound so easy to do (and then, I tried singing. It wasn't as easy as Nova made it seem). The instrumentation is so heavenly. I don't know if those drums are live or if Scott is just that fucking amazing at sampling/creating drums. The beat is so smooth. This song doesn't even sound 2012. It doesn't sound 2013. The song is from the future. Nova Starz is going to change and bring back life to RnB. I don't have much more to say about this, but that if you read this and don't download the, you're choosing to live under that rock.

QUINTUPLE NERD APPROVED, MY NIGGA.

Diplomatic - Vital Information [Single]

I know I'm late, but a few months ago, this dude that goes by Diplomatic sent me his single called "Vital Information." I keep telling myself I'll get to these sooner or later, well here I am finally getting to it. Diplomatic is a young rapper/producer from Baltimore. This is one of the singles from his upcoming mixtape "Dipluminati"
The beat is like a mix of Lex Luger and some 2006 RnB. It's smooth and hard at the same damn time. hmmm. The first verse is hard with a lot of interesting stuff said.
"Sex, money, and drugs. Pick on of the above. That's all you niggas love thinking you are a thug." That's a not so typical line about some very typical niggas.
"Devil worshiping idols whom are suicidal" I actually really like this line. That's probably the most significant thing I've heard today. Of course, I'm not one of those people who claims every artist is Illuminati, but say if Kanye West was (which I don't believe he truly is), he had lines like "Sold my soul to the Devil. That's a crappy deal" and "Suicide, what kinda talk is that?" Diplo goes at some of our greats with that one right there.
The chorus is interesting. "Take this vital info, stop being a bitch!" That's my new catch phrase. lol.
Overall, I think the song is okay. Diplomatic also made the beat. I like how it goes from intellectual one line to silly the next. It's Nerd approved. Check it out and see if you like it.

Y1 - FinallY Or1ginal (Mixtape Review)

What's up errrybody? It's me, the real Carlton Banks aka Bill Nye's 2nd cousin aka that nerdy ass nigga who decided to start a blog and bash on the niggas he hates aka Waverly Spades. I haven't done a mixtape review in a minute. Recently, Y1 found his way into my ear and I was itching to take a listen. Nicholas Pullen is an up and coming rapper from Baltimore going by Y1. Let's see what he sounds like.

Members Only (Introduction) [Prod. by Piz Corleone] - This song is a nice intro. Y1 throws some nice bars with a dope flow. Nice way to start shit.
"I don't need critique. I am who the real is." Well fuck this review.
4.5/5

Famous [Prod. by Audio Dope] - That hook is very warming. What is that from? It sounds so familiar. Y1 tells us how he wants to live. It's life most of us go for. I like how Y1 paints his dream to us. I really like his flow. The beat is great. Idk why, but this is better than other songs I hear where artists are complaining about how they want fame. This song is dope.
4.7/5

Don't Give Up [Prod. by William Kraz Johnson (of Eyecon Music)] - That MJ sample! yasss. That beat is on some 9th Wonder shit. This song is smooth. Y1 raps more about fame, but from a different angle, the dreaming part. The premise of fame. Y1 makes a dream so inspirational.
"Baltimore til my back break. Even though it's just a lil spec, that lil spec gon give this man a check."
4.2/5

Skylight [Prod. by Kae B (of Eyecon Music)] - This song had a dope music video. It shows a lot of Baltimore areas that I'm familiar with, which makes me happy. Someone from Baltimore getting love like that is a great thing to see. This easygoing song is nice to vibe to as the tape continues.
"I'm just tryna make it to the skylight. Surrounded by vampires, what a Twilight"
5.2/5

Recruiter (Skit) - Damn. I usually don't like skits too much, but this skit speaks numbers, not only about unemployment, but how most jobs aren't really shit. I'm glad I'm not the only one who believes it. Don't conform to just being a number. "Can we hurry the fuck up cuz I got class in like 45 minutes" lololol

What I Gotta Do [Prod. by William Kraz Johnson] - This song is nice. It took a few listens to get used to the chorus. Nice message on determination.
"The weed I had to cough it up because it was clouding every vision I would conjure up"
3/5

2000 to Forever (ft. 810 & Black Sunn) [Prod. by Kahlil The Wiz Kid] - The beat is that feel good shit! Y1 killed it and picked the perfect artists for features. When I first heard 810, I thought that was Da Kid Gowie! lol. 810 and Black Sunn perfectly complimented the track this is probably one of my faves off of the tape.
"All you do is slang hatred, then hide in the Matrix."
4/5

Reincarnation [Prod. by William Kraz Johnson] - Ohhh we're slowing things down now, huh? The beat sounds like a cut off one of the old Kanye albums. Y1's faster flow goes perfect over this. It's like Twista's verse on Slow Jamz. haha. I fucks with this track.
"Sometimes you gotta change the paint to get the right picture"
3.9/5

Rich Man & The Pauper (ft. Jay Verze) [Prod. by William Kraz Johnson] - A pauper is defined as a person without any means of support, but is there anything that defines a man as rich?  I remember when this joint dropped a few months ago. My question since I first heard this: Out of Jay Verze and Y1, who is the rich man and who is the pauper?
4.2/5

Music Is Cocaine (Skit) - At first, I thought this was just some random skit where Y1's playing guitar and I was like "wtf?," and then my nigga started singing. This should be made into a real song. It sounds like some J. Cole shit.

Let's Get Away (ft. Ashley Alexander) [Prod. by William Kraz Johnson] - That sample has me reminiscent of J. Dilla stuff. I'm also thinking of 9th Wonder. This track is just chill. It's the equivalent to a filler for me. I like. Vocals are provided by Ashley Alexander and they are quite beautiful.
3/5

Beautiful (ft. B Swails) [Prod. by Go (of Misfitz Sounds)] - Go (of Misfitz Sounds) gets mad love for the beat. It's nice and smooth, but I can't find the guy online whatsoever! Y1 drops a few hypnotizing bars. B. Swails voice is just soothing. The bitches are gonna love this. Y1 is adulating someone in the best way possible. I'm going to sing this to a girl and see where that gets me. lol
"I just like to live like it's my last night cuz when the day comes, this a past life."
4.7/5

Drinks In The Air [Prod. by Joshua "Jehdi" Thomas of The Humans] - The idea of this song makes me chuckle a bit. It starts on some really chill, Jamie Foxx type shit, and then the verse is  just Y1 going in. It's a nice, sudden change of feel. I don't drink, but I'm sipping my Pepsi to this joint. Jehdi is an amazing fool for this beat, especially that chorus section. This joint is the perfect mix of rap and club RnB (the Jamie Foxx/T-Pain shit).
4.2/5

Little Does She Know Part 1 [Prod. by William Kraz Johnson] - So much, yet so little to say about this song.. I'll let it speak for itself. Beat.. also crazy. Can't wait for Part 2.
5.2/5

Kobe Bryant [Prod. by Piz Corleone] - GOT ME FEELIN LIKE I'M KOBE BRYANT. This beat is on some Waka shit. If you were here, you could see me doing my swag dance. This nigga, Y1. This nigga right here, son! This nigga right here! Somebody put this shit on 92Q so I can drive to school like "CHANGE MY NUMBER ON THESE FUCKERS LIKE I'M KOBE BRYANT!" I love this song. I'm usually not into songs over beats like this, but Y1 is so versatile that I actually like this! His flow is ridiculous!
"Might be on the same team, but there's no alliance"
5/5

Goodnight - I thought the beat was a Kanye intro lol. This song starts with some crazy lines like "Don't be sipping like a bitch. I give a damn bout what yo throat say!" The beat is RIDICULOUS (after you get past the Kanye intro. lol.) The chorus reminds me of some J. Cole shit. This track is stupendous. The beat has a Kanye ending too. lol.
"Just don't be like Daniel and try to Jack my shit!"
4.9/5

Lincoln's Address - This track had a dope music video. The song is just inspirational. It's a nice look around and a great way to end the tape.
"Even though I'm 1%, my flow has to represent the 99."
4/5

Point blank, this whole tape was great. I heard a little of Y1 before, but I honestly did not know what to expect. I wouldn't call this a mixtape, but an album that Y1 was nice enough to give to us for free. Pullen is an amazingly versatile artist, going from songs like Skylight, to Let's Get Away to Kobe Bryant to Lincoln's Address and keeping it all real and amazing. There is never a lack in quality, stylistically or lyrically. This is honestly one of the best mixtapes I've heard this year. Y1 at times sounds like the perfect mix of Lupe Fiasco, J. Cole, and Kendrick Lamar. That's 3 of my favorite rappers rolled into a guy from Baltimore. This was a great mixtape and I can't wait to see what else Y1 has in store.

Bink (ft. Jay Verze) - Toddlers

Ayo. What's up? It's me, the real Carlton Banks. I haven't been able to write much lately because of my loads of homework. (School sucks. Winter break needs to be hear now.)
This a young nigga movement! Well, I saw this track on TrapRockRadio. I've reviewed Bink and Jay Verze before, so I had to check it out. The track is hard. This is some pretty equanimous shit that was just bumping to me. I had to bob my head for that chorus. I'm sorry Bink, but Verze killed you with that 2nd verse! Bink came back hard again for his 3rd verse. It sounded off beat for a minute at the end though. Well, that's all I have to say for this track. You check it out and judge for yourself.

Bobby Woody - Find Freedom Lonely Losers

Hey nerdy people. It's me, the real Carlton Banks, aka the real Black Nerd, aka Bill Nye's 2nd cousin through adoption. Today, we have the Loser Philospher, Bobby Woody's new track, Find Freedom Lonely Losers
I don't know if you guys know, but I know Bobby Woody personally. He inspired me to make this blog shit. I was waiting for him to drop something so I could tell him what I think (and bash him heheh). People call him me. He's not me.
jk I'm totes Bobby Woody, guys.
ok back to the song
"I smell bullshit.. Must be cuffin season." HAHAHAH
Somebody should put this on RapGenius.com. There are quite a few lines here that I'm pretty sure most non-nerdy people just wouldn't get, or some of us nerds who probably didn't catch certain things the first time. I honestly missed a few, but then I listened a second time and was just like dayum. Mostly talking about the cartoon references like: "I'm battling tragedy and mana is baffling. Yugioh showed me dueling, but cartoons ain't explain gravity. It's a theory, it's grappling me down, this isn't happening." That line right there is pretty cool. I'm pretty sure the talk of mana getting lower (baffling) is from Bakugan or one of the old TCG's that we all used to be on when we were kids and then it leads on into Yu-Gi-Oh which sets up a bit of a playful tone. The part that's like "Cartoons ain't explain gravity... It's grappling me down," suddenly saddens everything. Although, I thought that was a bit cool because it referred to the album art (which is a screenshot of the Pigeon Man episode of Hey Arnold) that I heard mentioned nowhere else. In reality, Pigeon Man would not be able to be carried by pigeons lol. That's a bit of an underlying plot for the next line where Woody (hehe funny name) where he begins to speak as he's in a conversation with someone else talking a confused girl out of suicide. "Starfire made it look easy." Flying=Suicide. It's.. touching?
The chorus is okay. Should've kept Amber Coffman on it! Her voice was so beautiful! and that body is so.. statesque..
The next verse starts out a bit offbeat to me, but it's the one I like best. The first line alone, "There is the American dream and the Black American Teen," is a big criticism on the American dream. If you read Of Mice and Men, George and Lennie's dream of a house of their own and working for themselves; that was and still is widely considered as the American Dream. The dream of a large amount (NOT ALL) of black kids wanting to be rappers or models. Again, not all, just a majority. Two very skewed dreams. It leads into talk of murders and a father brutally hitting his family. This is the area of which Bobby wants to Get Free of. One last line I'll touch on that almost gave me hope in humanity was "I seek answers that Sophocles couldn't reach. I'm in the search for pansophy. Maybe man will see that pansophy isn't impossible, but most of man's greatest knowledge has yet to be thought of." That line is a little stroke of intellect. I love it. I know we all know Sophocles (the ancient Greek playwright). I'm assuming by "couldn't reach," means that he died, or couldn't live long enough to experience everything. (Maybe this line is about Aeschylus. lol) At first, I thought it was a mistake and he meant to say Socrates the philosopher. As it keep going he mentions "The search for pansophy." Pansophy is basically, knowing everything. Ancient Greek philosophers believed it was possible to write down everything they knew into books. Apparently Bobby does too, just not yet. I feel like the Sophocles/Pansophy lines were supposed to connect somewhere, but I'm not sure. welp.

One line that I just didn't get in this song was "As I jump through dimensions like breach and breach security.." This is why we need Rap Genius. lol

The song was brilliant and the lyrics are well-crafted. If I could write so much about one of his remixes, imagine what I could do if this dude dropped a mixtape? You need to stop playing that one song a month thing and drop something serious! Or Imagine what I'd write about Kendrick Lamar's new album.. yeah haha. Go listen to it and support a Baltimore artist that I support.

Twoiney Lo - Ransom Freestyle

Before I say anything, the quality is horrible. Whoever mixes Twoiney's tracks, get your shit together. Like damn son, you had one job! lol.
If you don't already know Twoiney Lo, he's a rapper from Baltimore. He's head of Baltimore Group, NWM (Nothing Without Motivation) and attends Polytechnic Institute. (Go Parrots?)
This Ransom verse was the first of Twoiney's Twoiney Lo Thursdays. I'm assuming that since I'm a week late on this, a new one will be dropping again tonight. Now that I say it aloud, I feel like Twoiney Lo Tuesdays would've been better because it flows a bit more, but nonetheless, I like the consistency! As a supporter of Baltimore music, I believe I've been listening to Twoiney for about a year too. I'm not a big fan, but I can say that this is probably the best verse I've heard from him. (2nd best migiht be Bonfire with Ronny.) Even though this is the hardest I've heard from him, it still not articulate enough in my opinion. Twoiney needs to learn to distinguish himself, but not sound like a somewhat more competent version of Waka. One of his lines was "I heard they getting money, but they only slanging knicks." While a tad bit typical, I thought that was funny, but then one of his later lines was "How can you snow shovel without a shovel" and I was disappointed  While I could go on about Twoiney, I don't want to give you a full detailed review of his music based on one songs and the singles I've heard from him. I'll wait until his Hungry for Greatness mixtape to drop.

Shwaze Collins - Forever Dope

Adrian sent me this a few weeks ago around the time I put up Jay Verze's interview! I told him I'd put his tape up, but I feel bad because I've yet to do it! lol. But here it is! The reason this review didn't come sooner is because I already listened to the mixtape and for the review, I have to listen to each song over and put in a little more thought. Usually, I wouldn't mind, but school is hard work. Speaking of that, I just got my Interims. Someone tell me why I don't have all A's, please.
Ok, back on topic. Adrian "Shwaze" Collins is a 19 year old emcee from Baltimore, MD. Working his way up in the scene, you probably know who Shwaze somewhat is. If you don't, you've most likely at least heard him on a few Jay Verze songs or Brandon Woody's Power Circle remix. I like the dude, and here is his new mixtape, Forever Dope. My 2 cents are below.

Download Mixtape | Free Mixtapes Powered by DatPiff.com

Forever Dope [Prod. by Sdot Fire] - Ahhhhh Is that Street Fighter? I am already entertained. Nerd boy happy. That gets extra points. The intro is awesome. When the song starts, the Sdot produced track is FIRE (Pun intended). This first song is a nice taste of the lyricist Shwaze is.
"I ain't saving you hoes. What I look like? Private Ryan?"
4.2/5

The Grind (ft. Juice) [Prod. by Scrilla Beats] - Ok, I don't like this song as much as the last one, but it's okay. This is one of those songs I try to get girls to booty dance on me with (if only, if only). The beat alone makes you feel whizbang. I don't think I'm familiar with Juice, but he did a cool verse. That chorus is mixed roughly. Their verses didn't really impress me, but it's an aiight song.
2.7/5

We Make Money [Prod. by Y1] - Y1 produced this? Like, the rapper Y1? I didn't even know he made beats! Haha the beat alone is feel good. Collins threw on a few hot verses. The song is beautiful. I would say that if the song wasn't mainly about that money money life, it would be perfect, but this sounds like one of those songs that would be in the background of a montage of niggas throwing money around after they robbed a bank or something (sort of like in The Town, Tower Heights, or when the dude stole all of that money in Jumper). lol
4/5

Fame [Prod. by Dre Beats] - First off, I'd like to say that fame isn't everything, but let's be honest. We all want it. The beat is stupendous and Shwaze's vocals really compliment it. I like it. I feel like Shwaze should've put Jay Verze on the track. That would've been really dope. To the producer named "Dre Beats," as long as Dr. Dre and his headphones are around, that's probably not a good name.
"I can't use euphemisms if the youth don't get it."
4.7/5

Shellshocked (ft. Geter) [Prod. by Lexi Banks] - I'mma be brutally honest. I don't like this one. that's all. (y'all know I loathe trappin beats.) I guess the verses were cool.
2/5

Do It [Prod. by Sdot Fire] - When the beat drops and Collins' starts rapping, I'm just dancing around like Bill Cosby, over there. This song is hot. I like it. I'm not too fond of the chorus, but the rest is nice.
3/5

My Life (Interlude) [Prod. by Piz Corleone] - The first line that I really heard and made me think was "It's niggas tryna stop my shine, but it's Shwaze, baby!" I was just like, what the fuck are you saying, bro? But the rest of the song is cool. At times, he switches from typical rapper to lyric.
"Should I sell that shit they measure on a triple beam just so that y'all nigga can't appreciate me?"
3.3/5

Unstoppable (ft. Ta'Ler) [Prod. by Zone Beats]- I like how his last line on the interlude was "I'm Unstoppable" and it goes into this. The beat is FIRE. Azula ain't got nothing on Zone with this one. "It's a cold world, but I'm not from the Ville." lololol. I like this song. That is all.
"I have a dangerous mindset. Blind eyes, quiet is kept."
3/5

Party Everywhere (ft. Yung Ram) [Prod. by Piz Corleone] - In this song, Shwaze tolerably sounds like everyone on MMG, but Ross and Gunplay. Ram sounds like Gunplay. lol. I think it's the beat. Beats like that  have been rapped on a certain way for so long, that people don't change it up, you know? like this sounds like it could've been on Self Made 2. The Chorus even sounds like Meek Mill bawling for no real reason. This song has me doing my Bill Cosby swag dance, but damn, where's the originality?
2.4/5

The Return [Prod. by Sledgren] - Sledgren be on some Lex type shit sometimes. Anybody in the mood for something a little more.. tardigrade? It feels like Shwaze's flow gets off at time. I don't really know. The song is aiiight. I hear a lot of those typically recycled lyrics in this song.
"Pillaging their villages like I am a pirate." lol. pirates don't leave the ship. c'mon guise
2/5

Gang Green Gang (ft. Rickie Jacobs) [Prod. by Zone Beats] - Ok, I didn't like the intro to the beat, but I really fucks with this one. I had that Obama face when the beat dropped and Shwaze started rapping. Rickie Jacobs just killed it as usual. What could I have expected though?
"Better watch what you say son. They don't play fair where I'm from."
3.7/5

Devil In A Tight Dress/Curse (Interlude) [Prod. by Lexi Banks] - Sooo, I was expecting Kanye West's Devil In A New Dress to start playing, but instead, I'm hearing the end of Fancy by Drake looped. I'm not complaining. It's a smooth intro and I like it. Collins goes on about that one perfect girl, that we all dream of. That hook is hot, too. I know it's sampled, but I just love how it was placed. While describing this girl, Shwaze definitely gets cheesy, but it's cute. When it goes to acapella, I can hear that it's heartfelt, but still cheesy, you know? I like it all though. I feel like it would've been cooler if they were two separate track; it would sound like two different chapters of a story. I like how in the end, we find out, it's all just a dream.
4.6/5

Self Made (ft. Y1) [Prod. by Scrilla Beats] - Ok Shwaze's 1st verse sounds horribly mixed. TIP: Please don't let your mixtapes have a horrible mix. The beat and the hook makes this sound like some XV type stuff. I like. Aahhhh I heard another "Green like Cee Lo" line. That has to be one of the most overused lines since "Fuck You" came out. While I don't like Shwaze's verses that much, Y1 put some magic on here. It makes me wonder what Y1 would sound like on a song with XV. (Can we make that happen?) "Jay Verze the future. Shwaze the underground king and I'm the overlord of rap dropping brown things." That one line in Y1's verse makes me really think about the whole ISMG team in a light of where they fit, like  a puzzle. it's cool.
"I try to be great, but everybody in the city loves to hate"
2.4/5

Bullseye [Prod. by Scrilla Beats]
- Scrillaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!! Scrilla is that nigga for this beat. lol. Shwaze didn't kill it, but it's listenable. I'm pretty sure I heard him say in the chorus "I'm chillin like a chandalier." lolwut? I hear a lot of weak lines that don't really make since to me, but I'm not gonna go into that. The chorus feels so off to me.
1.9/5

Heavy Hitters (ft. Jay Verze & Yung Ram) [Prod. by Sdot Fire] - When I heard the beat, I started thinking of Mercy. I was ready for the Rick Hertz tag. I feel Shwaze could've went harder. Verze killed it. That lil nigga definitely sounds like Wiz on this. lol. I never noticed that until my brother told me yesterday, and I'm hearing it a bit, but it's somewhat different.. It's cool. I like that. Ram's verse is eh
2.6/5

Outro [prod. by SdotFire] - This is probably my 2nd favorite track. The beat speaks for itself and Shwaze compliments.
4.2/5

Ok, so Shwaze is a decent artist. The dude really has potential in my eyes, but the problem with that is that I've been thinking he's had potential for the past year or two. He needs to quit with the typical lines and make each and every one on that 2004 Lil Wayne level. Also, almost every song seems like something that would be played in the club. I feel like Collins needs some variation in his style. The best artist can create more than the feelings of love and fun. The mixtape is very decent in my opinion. I expect better from you Shwaze!
