Jay Verze - David Ruffin [New Song]

What's up? It's me, the real Carlton Banks aka the Based Trap God aka the Original black Nerd aka Bill Nye's 2nd Cousin. Today, I'm here with Jay Verze's latest single David Ruffin. I know, I know. I'm late. This single dropped on like the first day of the year and it's the 28th. I got school. Petition me. Well let's get to the song now.
Produced by Scrilla (who seems to be one of Verze's favorite Soundclick producers), this beat is just too smooth. Througout the track, Verze raps about how much life has changed for him in the past year as he's been getting popular making music. We all know that story. When people start to see another person on the comeup, they try to hop on the bandwagon. In the chorus, Mr. 21117 spits "They all tryna see it now. Got 'em thinking wow. They saying 'Oh you made it now? C'mon, let's get down. I'm so proud. You my brother now. We gon' make it out.'" While Verze complains of some people calling him on his high horse, his feelings are completely understandable. I've known of Verze since I heard his feature on Baltimore. Along with a lot of Baltimore talent, Verze has really been coming up. He's in the newspaper, doing these interviews, and opening up for Cam'ron. It's only natural that people would hop on the bandwagon. The song is a little motivation to keep going. I like the title reference to the late Temptation, David Ruffin. He started in the Temptations as a backup, but later became the frontman. The difference between him and Verze though is that ego problems (and a slight cocaine addiction) eventually killed one of them. JayIsonCocainelol 

My advice to Verze: Stay humble until you really make it. Then rerelease this song. haha. When old niggas come up like "C'mon let's get down," just give them the number to the rejection hotline and get so much satisfaction when you give them that face like ----->

A$AP Rocky - Long Live A$AP [Album Review]

What's up? It's the black nerd and today, we have the Purple Swagged out rapper who got famous overnight after a video with a sexy white girl wearing gold grills. You already know who it is, and I have something to tell you guys. I haven't said this to anyone yet, but one of my guilty pleasures is A$AP Rocky (no homo). I know, there's nothing to be guilty for, but since he's obviously has never been the most lyrical or genius or anything (and sometimes sounds like he's featured on his own song), and I'm supposed to represent the epitome of a black nerd, why would a black nerd love a guy like A$AP Rocky? (it's not because he's black..) hmmm.. Maybe I can give you a valid explanation after the review of his album.

Long Live A$AP [Prod. by Jim Jonson, Rico Love, Finatik N Zac, Frank Romano, & Lord Flacko] -Ahhh the title track. This was definitely a single released before the album came off. That guitar sample and (later on in the song) chorus are so dazed, yet so scintillating. When Rocky starts rapping, it's so hardcore, but the sudden transition isn't bad. Usually transitions just throw me off in a bad way, but for once, this did not happen. It's crazy to believe that's actually Rocky singing. It sounds too good to be him, but you know it's not autotune, nawm saying?

Goldie [Prod. by Hit-Boy] - This is another one of the singles that was released wayyyyyyyyyyy before the album. I wasn't feeling it at first, but after a few listens, that chorus is just so easing. It always throws me off a bit for some reason, but it sounds good. The beat is so fresh and new. One thing I notice while listen to this is that every two lines are always about two different things. This dude cannot stay on topic for shit, but I guess I can't really count that against him. We all know that's not what we listen to Rocky for. That's not his lane, but now that I notice it, it's subtly annoying me.

PMW (All I Really Need.) (ft. Schoolboy Q) [Prod. by T-Minus & Nikhil Seetharam] - Ahh shit, that beat sounds like something DJ Khaled passed on! (When I read that T-Minus produced it, I realized that it probably was!) I like it though. I have noticed that just in the title of this song, Rakim here gives us three of the main themes spoken of throughout the album. There's nothing wrong with that (yet). This song is still hot. Schoolboy Q's verse was just ridiculous. His flow is wild. I definitely must've heard this before the album drop. These two make a great duo in my opinion.

LVL [Prod. by Clams Casino] - AHH YEAH. CLAMS CASINO IS FINALLY ON THE ALBUM. Clams Casino and A$AP is just a great combination. His chill beats are just perfect someone as trill as Rocky. Casino is a new J. Dilla in my opinion. There's so much soul. He's an alien, I swear. This beat sounds like an Imogen Heap sample (I haven't checked yet though). Flacko's simply complex (this probably makes no sense.) flow throughout some of this song is definitely one of the reasons I like him.

Hell (ft. Santigold) [Prod. by Clams Casino] - As this song starts, I'm not feeling it so much. The chorus is just.. ugh. The bridge and everything. It's just not the right vibe for me. That Project Pat reference caught my attention though!

Pain (ft. OverDoz) [Prod. by Soulfien3000] - First of all, who is OverDoz? Soulfien3000 made a ridiculous beat. This song has that Southside Chop-n-Screw feet. A$AP sounded like Childish Gambino for a second. Whoever OverDoz is, his verse is great. He spit one of my favorite lines I've heard so far. "Everybody's hot. Everybody's an artist." I know that's not ridiculously complicated or anything, but it's an observance that just makes me feel a bit introspective.

Fuckin Problem (ft. 2Chainz, Drake & Kendrick Lamar) [Prod. by 40 & C. Papi] - Rocky's verse is nice to start with, but to be honest, it does sound a bit like  a feature compared to everyone else (besides 2Chainz). It's just his typical shit. Drake's verse is just funny. This nigga's talking about paying for breast enlargement, but on his album, he telling bitches they can do better, and in older songs, he trying to respect them and shit. Drake, you fuckin' up, son. hhahahhaa. During the middle of his verse where he's like "and juuuuuuuu---," I bet he was reading the lyrics off his Blackberry and messed up when scrolling and just kept going and told 40 to keep it. lol. I see he stuck in a line about his dick -coughcoughwayne.-  And the fact that this nigga coproduces the shit and actually goes by the name "Champagne Papi." Come on 40? Are you this guy's ho' now? lol. Noah, what the fuck were you thinking even letting this nigga get credit for putting in a kick and hihat? lol. Kendrick just went Kendrick. Everything about this guy is above standard. I like the reference to his own song. lol. Okay, I think a month ago, I did a review of Eske's version of this song. Not going to lie, I sorta like that version better than the original.

Wild For The Night (ft. and prod. by Skrillex & Birdy Nam Nam) - One thing I've noticed is that Rocky collabs with the randomest people. I think that's cool. Every artist always says they want to collab with this and that artist from another artist, but Rocky is really doing it. I wasn't feeling this joint at first, but I got into it eventually. This beat is so Skrillex though. lol. You know what I mean if you listen to a bit of Skrillex.

1 Train (ft. Kendrick Lamar, Joey Bada$$, YelaWolf, Danny Brown, Action Bronson & Big K.R.I.T.) [Prod. by Hit-Boy]  - That looks like a nice lineup, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. A song's not a classic just because it has a nice lineup, sorta like a basketball team isn't great because it has a lot of stars. The problem with so many stars is that everyone tries to stand out instead of work together to make someone great. I would usually critique everyone's verse separately usually, but nahh. This whole song sounds like they're outside of the studio doing a cellphone cypher. Verse-wise, surprisingly, Kendrick's verse isn't anything special to me. (That's weird because ususally, I'm raging about how he kills everything!) Danny Brown's verse is a bit disgusting. The ones that really stand out to me are K.R.I.T.'s, YelaWolf's and Action Bronson's. (Seriously. peep the explanations of Bronson's verse on RapGenius.) I love K.R.I.T.'s verse. I mean, I feel like it's the hottest because he's the last and he has to be the hottest. Hit-Boy made an okay beat. The whole song is nothing special to me honestly, but I ain't mad. This shit sounds like something a rap group on YouTube would do. lol.

Fashion Killa [Prod. by Friendzone, Hector Delgado & Lord Flacko] - Friendzone coproduced this!! ahhhh I love that dude. The beat is chill, but you can hear that Rocky only put this joint on the album for the bitches. I feel like this was meant to be one of the album singles. Watch him drop a music video to this and make maaaaaaaaaaad dough off of the single. Everything about this just feels bitchmade. lol. C'mon Rocky! We don't love these hoes!

Phoenix [Prod. by Danger Mouse] - This beat is proof that Rocky is king of choosing the great beats. It's also proof that Danger Mouse (the other half of Gnarls Barkley that isn't Cee Lo Green) is honestly one of the greatest modern producers I've heard. Lyric-wise, this is one of the more lyrical songs from Rocky I've heard on the album. He's spitting stuff like "Jesus Christ never lied, still was crucified." It's all too ill.

Suddenly [Prod. by Lord Flacko, Hector Delgado & A$AP Ty Beats] - This beat is on some different shit. It's like a mix of Kanye West and Clams Casino. It reminds me of a producer I know of named Jules Watts. Nothing much to say about this, but it's nice and chill. It's a great way to end the album if you were too cheap for the Deluxe version (or too lame to download Spotify).

Jodye [Prod. by Joey Fatts & Lord Flacko] - Oh shit! Is this supposed to be horrorcore or some shit? It's hard as fuck though. The beat sounds like some shit The Holy Karon would rap on. I like how Rocky takes the chorus from Tammy's Song, but gives it a completely different meaning. It's just as reckless though.The A$AP niggas are a fuckin' gang. lol

Ghetto Symphony (ft. Gunplay & A$AP Ferg) [Prod. by V Don, Lord Flacko & Jonathan "MP" Williams] - FROU FROU! You hear that Psychobabble, son? After that sample chorus intro thing, Rocky just goes hard. He's not really saying stuff that's so important, but that beat is keeping him sound hard as shit. He's like the lead vocalist to the GSO (Ghetto Symphony Orchestra). My nigga, Gunplay!!!! I've loved this nigga since Cartoons & Cereal. I wish he would stop fuckin' up and stay out of jail. This dude killed his verse though. He talked a lot about being arrested/in court in this verse. Gunplay's no Kanye, but he's way more than a Rick Ross. haha. A$AP Ferg just went the fuck in. I like how his first line was a response to Rocky's first line. Rocky is 3000 and Ferg is Big Boi... well not really, but you get what they're getting at!

Angels [Prod. by Amsterdam] - Oooooh another Imogen Heap sample. I don't know who Amsterdam is, but I'm messing with it. Lord Flacko here did kept changing up his verse. I fucks with this! I feel bad for sayign this song is pretty typical A$AP Rocky, but it's still dope as fuck.

I Come Apart (ft. Florence Welch) [Prod. by Emile Haynie & Amanda Ghost] - This song is just so feel good. Emile produced this? Ayye, it's got that 2007 Cudi feel. Florence Welch's voice is just beautiful. You know what I said earlier about Rocky collabing with anyone he wants? He did that again here. This woman is amazing. A$AP Rocky's verse was a nice touch too. It feels like it wasn't his song, but I don't really care. The track sounds so nice. This should go to the radios and get popular. This may be my favorite track on the album.

Overall, this album was exactly what I expected from A$AP Rocky. That's not a bad thing, but I always want a little more than what I expect when I listen to someone's album. I still really liked this album. I still don't know why I like about the guy fully. Whatever he does, he does it right. This Harlem boy with some Southern swag mixed in makes for a guy who just makes really catchy, feel good, in the mood songs. Rocky's beat selections are PERFECT. I know I don't like them all, but they're all just perfectly crafted for him. Rocky is also really bold with features with some very random people, such as Skrillex and Birdy Nam Nam. That's not what I'm expecting from a rap album, but somehow, I end up liking it. The only thing that really holds Rocky back at some point is his lyrics. That switch topics every two lines. I know we don't listen to him for lyricism because that's not him, but lyrics still count for something, don't they? All I'm saying is that there wasn't a lot of stuff worthy of quoting. At the end of the day, Sir Flacko is still somewhat of a great songwriter. Everything is a hit, even if it's not exactly meant to be a hit. He's just one of those guys that I can hear changing mainstream music and radio standards. A$AP Rocky is so different and out of all of the rappers I hear on the daily, Rocky has a lot more potential than most. I can clearly hear that he will go far. I honestly would say that he is our generation's Jay-Z. I don't mean that in the sense of lyrical, but like a complete changer. Rocky has "longevity" written (or should I say tatted) all over him. It sucks that Rocky doesn't have many topics to rap about yet, but as he evolves, he'll only get greater. Rocky gets props for collaborating with a lot of lesser known people and producers. This was a reeally good first album and I'm really hoping for better with the next one.

Bilal Muhammad (ft. Merciless Rod) - Birth Of Rap [Audio]

Today, I have this track I stumbled upon from up and coming, Baltimore rapper Bilal Muhammad. He brings in Merciless Rod (of Fatle Gang) for a nice feature in the beginning. I like this track. Both go to Poly, so I don't know if it's produced by fellow classmate Layno F. or someone else, but it sounds like someone played with the same sample as Clams Casino's "Gods" beat. This track is pretty ill.

Bink - 3.5 [EP Review]

Wow, I haven't posted in almost 2 weeks. Well welcome back class. It's me, your teacher, the real Carlton Banks, the original black nerd, Bill Nye's 2nd cousin, etc. Today, I have in my inbox, Bink's latest EP, 3.5. He asked me to listened to the whole thing before I ever judge him again and that's what I'm going to do right now. If you don't know who Bink is, he's a teen rapper from Baltimore rapper (he dons himself the best). This kid has mad lines and an alter ego named "Skate God." I'm not so fond of his music, but at the same time, I'm so drawn to listen. With that said, I have somewhat high expectations. I liked his last mixtape, and I'm really hoping this is wayy better. That album art is interesting. I sorta want to know when that picture of lil Warren was taken. lol.

Invitation (Prod. by Sk808) - That beat alone is a nice way to start something. A lot of crazy flow shit here. Not much to say here.

Food For Thought [Prod. by YungOneBeats] - This is a great song right here. This is my favorite song so far. Bink gets really introspective and it's an interesting view of him. I'm definitely gon sing that hook and download that joint. One thing that makes me laugh, though, is that he says "I ain't got time for hoes." Isn't this the same Bink who always talks about fucking a lot of bitches?

The verses weren't weak, but the lines sound typical, like stuff I've heard before. I skipped to the next song midtrack because it was just boring.

Breathless [Prod. by HunkE] - That beat sounds like some old Kid Cudi shit.. I'm already fucking with this. This sounds like one of those beats that not even the whackest rappers could fuck up. Not saying Skate God is whack, but you know what I mean? Like the "I'm On 2.0" beat... even Gudda Gudda had a good verse. Bink kills it. That is all.

LFDY (ft. Jujuan Allen) [Prod. by Dosha Burna Beats] - Piz is on that beat and it's hot! I fucks with it. Some A$AP Rocky type shit for the chorus that I'm vibing to. Bink killed it. I like his 2nd verse slightly better than the first. LFDY=Live Fast, Die Young. It's a superstar lifestyle. Jujuan goes wild on his shit. I love that nigga. "Know I won't live till my 70's, so my 7's blessed."

Division & Mosher (ft. Rickie Jacobs & Jae Poet) [Prod. by Dosha Burna Beats] - Each verse sounds like a Charles Hamilton freestyle. This whole joint sounds CH, down to the beat, and I'm a fan of it. Bink did some hot shit. Rickie Jacobs just went in. Just like every other time. "By any means, I'm not converting to skinny jeans. I like big asses. You know, the little things." Jae's verse was nice too. I've definitely heard more amazing stuff from him though.

Reminiscing - Somebody send that beat to French Montana. loljk. It's chill. I fucks with it. I don't smoke, but I think I'd get high to this. Not going to lie, it sounds like Bink wrote most of this while he was high. This isn't anything special, but it's a cool track.

Les Finale [Prod. by Delta Records] - That beat is hot. -bobs head- -Bink starts rapping.- Oh shit, this is a great song. Bink just goes real on everything here. The flow gets ridiculous. The beat gets crazier. The mixtape needs more tracks like this.

Ok, so I got a little bit of what I expected with this EP, but I also got some more. Overall, I really like the project. In my opinion, it's better than the Fuck Rap series. A few songs really stood out to me, like Les Finale, Division & Mosher, and LFDY. Others seemed like just like Bink doing his own thing, but not putting as much into it. Each song is really hit or miss. Part of that seems to be due to the beats, and then some, he just says some ridiculously crazy things. Most of the features are ridiculous (most notable ones in my opinion include, Rickie Jacobs', DDm's, and Jujuan Allen's). I like how Bink stays with some of the same DMV producers (Piz Corleone/Dosha Burna, Sk808, Yungonebeats). It feels like he's really working with Baltimore to attempt at improving the scene's chances at making it. It's all teamwork and he's doing his part. One thing that really annoyed me was that the audio quality was not good. I know that shouldn't matter because it's about the music and yadda yadda yadda, well quality is one of the main things I hear, and I'm not the only one! Some tracks sounded like (in the words of Jay Verze) "potatoes." Some verses sounded like they recorded on laptops, and then others had amazing quality. The voice didn't fit on the beat sometimes, that type of stuff. A good amount of mixing/mastering needs to be worked on. Besides that, the EP was nice. I want to hear Bink do something conceptual. Like a storyline or some type of focus. Bink tends to rap about a lot of the same stuff, but it get's weirdly random. I feel like when he's ready for a real concept album or project, that'll be amazing. Keep that shit up, Bink

Twoiney Lo - I Have A Dream

On this fine New Year, I bring you some TwoineyLo. I know you're thinking "Wave, I thought you hated that nigga. That last post was brutal!" That's not true. I don't hate people! ...I just hated that song. Twoiney Lo sent me this a few days ago and I slept ago, but I decided to turn over a new leaf and look at everything in my inbox. I took a listen and I somewhat like this. Twoiney starts off with his own speech about his dream and life. Then, the beat fades in. The beat is nice. Ufmo made some old East Coast type shit. I like it. Sounds like a Joey BadA$$ beat. The lyrics didn't appeal to me at first, but at least they were on beat. Twoiney is clearly important. He spit a few good lines like "How you living holy if all you do is sin?" (possible Holy Life diss) "I find it crazy how people think they are the shit.. cuz the own a lot of material things." I like that Lil Wayne reference he stuck in there. The song ends with an MLK speech which reminds me of the end of Bobby Woody's "I Hate The Word," except it's actually Martin Luther King. lol. The song is nice and Twoiney Lo is showing improvement.

Nova Starz - Not Surprised (Prod. by Street Scott) [NEW SONG]

What's up? It's the real Carlton Banks over here and I'm just hoping y'all had an awesome Christmas (or whatever holiday you celebrate (or if you don't celebrate a holiday at all, I just hope you had a nice day)). My laptop's up and running again, so I'm back to this blog thing I do in my spare time. I'm on break until Wednsday, so I'll have a lot of that hehe.
This track right here, I heard a few days ago on BmoresVeryOwn and Street Scott sent it into me. Before I go in about how amazingly futuristic this is, let me introduce everyone here to Nova Starz and Street Scott. Both are artists from Baltimore. Nova Starz is a singer. I first heard of her earlier this year when I saw her video for Time Machine. That video in itself is crazy; the way it's put together, amazing vocals, and ridiculous production (also done by Scott). This woman is bringing originality and a new sound to RnB. She reminds me of Jai Paul in the exemperintality, but still having sort of an RnB/pop feel in her songs. Around then is also the time I first got into Street Scott. One of my friends who is also into the Baltimore Hip Hop Scene told me about him and this dude is ridiculous. While he's produced for major label artists such as Jim Jones, Max B, and Jadakiss, Street's production is going to be a major foundation in that Baltimore sound. He's produced a lot of Rickie Jacob's dopest shit and made heaven in a FreEP for Rome Duran. On top of his amazing production skills, Scott is an amazing rapper, doing features for artists such as Big Dro and having a single like Rocket Man. These two people are, in my opinion, two of the most creative and original artists we have in Baltimore. They're both on my list of people to make it out of here. You know what's even better?

The song starts off with a little vocal bit that I know is from something else! Ahhh it's killing me that I can't remember what it is. Nova's voice throughout this whole track is just beautiful-- no. It's better than that. It's sumptuous. All vocal delivery is flawless. I wouldn't be surprised if she recorded it all in one take. Nova Starz makes singing sound so easy to do (and then, I tried singing. It wasn't as easy as Nova made it seem). The instrumentation is so heavenly. I don't know if those drums are live or if Scott is just that fucking amazing at sampling/creating drums. The beat is so smooth. This song doesn't even sound 2012. It doesn't sound 2013. The song is from the future. Nova Starz is going to change and bring back life to RnB. I don't have much more to say about this, but that if you read this and don't download the, you're choosing to live under that rock.

Eske - Fuckin Problems (ft. BKnitts, Tommy Prospect & Bobby Woody) [New Song]

Ayo! It's Bill Nye's 2nd cousin aka the original Black Nerd, Waverly Spades! I'm pretty sure this song was released about a month ago, but I had to post it! It has three people that I've posted before and love! (BKnitts, Bobby Woody, and Tommy Prospect) If you don't recognize Tommy Prospect, it's because he used to go by the name TGK. "Tommy Prospect" sounds a bit more matured to me. I like it. The new kid here is a Milwaukee rapper that was raised in the suburbs of Chicago (lolwut?) named Eske. I'm pretty sure that's a river in Ireland. And now that I've taught you something new, we can go on with the song! I'll just tell you guys how I like it verse by verse.

BKnitts - This verse was one of the hardest to me. Also the 2nd funniest. "Sweet Jesus. BKnitts, stop rapping like you mean it! People gotta think you're not manic or conceited!" The verse easily switches around and gets a bit narcissistic. That's not a bad thing. It's just really clever to use your problems on a trap called Fuckin' Problem lol. "Got 2Chainz, I'll be glad to rip em off ya!" Did I hear BKnitts do Schoolboy Q's "yawk yawk" thing?

Eske - I have mixed feelings about this verse. It's not bad or anything, but you know how people feel about ASAP Rocky's verse of the original to this song? That's how I feel about this verse. It's only feature quality, but it's his song. Eske speaks a lot about the job market and rappers messing things up being his problems, but other times, lyrics put together just don't make sense to me. Overall, this verse is great. I listened to some of the other stuff on this guys YouTube where I like his verses more. They just make more sense to me! My main complaint is the quality. The verse sounds recorded on a laptop! Step that game up, son!
"Music game is tough and this job market's cutthroat." 

Tommy Prospect - I like that first line. It reminds me of Camus' "Maman died today" in The Stranger. "Me and Bobby just some hoodrat misfits." idk why exactly, it's just odd. like, who starts a verse like that? lol. "I'm gifteeeed like Christmas!" I see who is the Drake of this song. lol. "See a 14 year old, all y'all know is the man!" I like Tommy's verse because instead of rapping about his problems, he raps about his lack thereof. Not saying he has a lack thereof, but this is the verse that seems most mainstream crafted, but it's not. Instead of complaining, it's basking in the happiness of the moment. I fucks widit.
"I'm gon punch my problems in the face. What the fuck is a problem anyway?"

Bobby Woody - okay as soon as I heard "THEY LOVE DINGO GANG THAT'S THE FUCKIN' PROBLEM," I had that face like "this nigga.." This verse is the funniest to me. Bobby clearly is the one who sticks to the topic of the song: fucking girls; but his problem: girls don't want to fuck him. lol. "I said 'girl, I know  you want this dick!' She said 'Bobby, that shit sick!'" Like it starts off really serious like "And now this music shit is a business," but somehow gets to lines like "A virgin getting more bitches on his Toshiba" lmao is this nigga rapping about porn? I don't understand! And he gets to talking about the friend zone and shit. Somebody, please put this in RapGenius for me. I'm having a fuckin problem understanding what he's rapping about!
"Ho happy she got a nigga acting niggerish.. Bitch, I got a white girl acting liquorish!"

Overall, I like the song! Nerd approval over here!

Oh and by the way, I saw this.. That video is almost at 1000 views. Where's the video, you liars?
